School trips and workshops

• A quiet room is available in the Medlock Education Centre, where workshops take place. 
• Visual, sensory and workshop preparation guides can be downloaded in advance. 

If your group has specific access needs, just let us know when you book.  

Yes. You’re welcome to visit in advance. Bring your booking confirmation to the Visitor Centre for free entry. 

Our Visual Story and Sensory Information Guides can help children who like to know what to expect, showing them images and information of what they might see and do.

Please have these details ready: 

• School and lead teacher contact details 
• Number of pupils 
• Preferred visit dates 
• Arrival and departure times 
• Chosen activities or workshops 
• Any access or SEND requirements 
• Lunch area request, if needed 

As demand is high, we can’t offer provisional bookings. Booking in advance gives you the best chance of securing the date you want – fill in the enquiry form. 

Prices may vary depending on the activities you choose. You can: 

• Pay by card, cash or cheque on arrival, or 
• Request an invoice when you book 

Our free learning resources are designed to support classroom work before, during and after your trip. Self-led activity materials are available for different Key Stages as well as guided tours of the ship, subject to availability - see links to the relevant Key Stage above.

Brief the adults in your group: Make sure helpers know the plan for the day and what’s expected of them. If you’ve booked a workshop, our workshop leader will ask you to divide the class into smaller groups. 

We offer free entry for one adult per six pupils and any 1:1 support. 

Recommended ratios: 

• Key Stage 1–2: 1 adult to 6 pupils 
• Key Stage 3–4: 1 adult to 10 pupils

The site opens at 10am. 

• If you arrive early, please wait on the coach or in Brunel Square. 
• One adult should collect tickets from the Visitor Centre. 
• A member of the crew will welcome your group and give a short introduction. 

Yes. Storage areas are available across the site but please keep valuables with you. 

We’ll show you where to go when you arrive. 

• The Riggers’ Yard is a covered outdoor picnic space overlooking the water.
• Groups are given timed lunch slots subject to availability. 
• Food is not allowed on the ship or inside the exhibition spaces. 

Toilets as well as accessible facilities are available across the site: 

• SS Great Britain Experience Museum 
• Visitor Centre 
• On board the ship 
• Being Brunel 

If you hear a continuous alarm: 

• Gather your group straight away. 
• Follow the exit signs to the nearest safe exit. 
• Wait outside for instructions from staff. 
• Do not re-enter until you are told it is safe.
